Fairline’s future secured.

The future of one of the best-loved British-based boat builders, Fairline Boats, has been secured today, thanks to a deal that sees assets of Fairline Boats bought out of administration for an undisclosed sum.

The new company, Fairline Yachts, is funded by two long term UK-based Russian investors, who are both highly experienced in managing and developing marine businesses and in the production of high technology products, IT and media services. Both are also passionate boat owners.

Russell Currie Lo ResRussell Currie has been appointed as Managing Director to lead the new business. With nearly 30 years directly relevant experience, Russell has a very strong background in the luxury motor yacht industry. A Fairline dealer since 1998, Russell is CEO of Fairline North Mallorca, where he has achieved over £90million of sales. Prior to his role at Fairline North Mallorca, Russell was Engineering Director at Sunseeker International’s factory team based at Mallorca, and was Chief Test Engineer at Princess Yachts International before that. The appointment of Russell ensures continuity of senior management at Fairline Yachts and safeguards close customer and boat dealer relations under the new ownership structure.

Russell says, “I am delighted to have been appointed Managing Director for Fairline Yachts. With the resources of the investors, coupled with the expert knowledge of the management team and our energy and passion for the brand, the structure is in place for a great future for Fairline Yachts. We will focus on creating high quality luxury motor yachts that boaters will want to own and dealers will want to sell.

“As a sign of our commitment to Fairline Yachts’ loyal customer base and dealer network, we will be completing all orders for boats received by Fairline Boats, including those that have not yet started being built as well as those that are already in production.”

The newly formed company will operate from its manufacturing facilities in Oundle, Northamptonshire. To ensure continuation of production of the boats, the company invites previous employees to apply for the c.100 jobs that will be immediately available.

Fairline is a global brand, soon to be celebrating its 50th anniversary. The company specialises in the design, engineering, manufacture and distribution of luxury boats in the 38 to 80 feet range. For more information about Fairline, please visit: www.fairline.com

Mallorca brokerage division, “Marine Unlimited” bucks the trend with impressive sales in 2015

December 2015.

Marine Unlimited, the dedicated brokerage division of one of Europe’s most successful and well respected dealerships, has announced strong sales through 2015 despite the downward trend in the European boat markets. Launched in 2011 and based in the prestigious marina of Puerto Portals, Mallorca, Marine Unlimited provides an unrivalled level of service to both buyers and sellers alike in the powerboat brokerage arena. Following the relaunch of their new website, Marine Unlimited’s Managing Director James Blackburn feels confident that sales will continue to grow as they move into 2016. “People are still boating and 2015 has seen an increase in demand for quality pre-owned boats due to the excellent GBP/EUR exchange for British buyers” explains Blackburn, adding “Buyers are more cautious and can be overwhelmed by the number and choice of boats on offer, but with our expertise and knowledge, we are able to help buyers make the right choices and to guide them through the whole process with piece of mind and total security”. “It is still a tough market for sellers, but with a realistic approach and sensitive mediation, a satisfactory outcome can usually be reached. Having sold over 40 boats this year, we are constantly looking for more boats to sell”. “Our success as a new boat dealer has largely been due to the customers experience post-sale, with a number of customer focused events held throughout the season. This helps our customers get the most out of their boating and gives access to a much broader social network. Boating should enhance precious leisure time and that is core to our philosophy”.

M U Yachting S.L. (trading as Marine Unlimited) was established in 2011 alongside the already successful Fairline South Mallorca office to grow the brokerage division of the company and capture more non-Fairline owners. With sales averaging 40+ boats a year the relaunch of the website will be sure to help the growth of the business.

Balearic Nautical Industry is Booming

Majorca Daily Bulletin.      11th July 2015

The Spanish association for nautical businesses is reporting that 2,644 pleasure boats were registered during the first six months of the year, which denotes a 15% increase over last year.

The data, says the association, can be interpreted both by the peak demand that there is because of the proximity of high summer and by general growth patterns in the national economy. The upward trend in demand is expected to continue, though this demand is principally for smaller craft that attract lower costs and lower tax: almost 90% of the registration has been for boats up to eight metres in length.
Nevertheless, there has also been a 17% rise in registrations for boats between twelve and sixteen metres. In percentage terms, this is the highest increase for the different categories, though the actual number of boats registered was only 68.
The Balearic Islands are leading the way in the number of registrations.

An increase of over 15% (424 craft) and with a market share of 16% place the islands ahead of Barcelona where the increase to 296 registrations was up by 10% (to give a market share of just over 11%). Girona comes third with 182 registrations but a much higher percentage rise: up 31%.
There has also been a steep rise in the number of charter boats (including jet skis) that are registered for hire. 333 such craft were registered in the first half of the year, an increase of over 50%. In June alone, the increase was 60%.

Illegal Balearic Boat Charter Threatens Industry and Client Safety.

Press release...      23rd June 2015
Miss Sarah Drane   Purple Cake Factory

APEAM, the Palma-based Commission for Yacht Charter, has recently reported that more than 1,000 vessels are operating illegally in the Balearics. 25-year-established easyboats believes the practise not only damages legitimate business but also puts client safety at risk.

Lorenzo Vila, Director of Port Andratx-based easyboats, says, “Personally I am delighted that APEAM has brought this scandal to attention – and it must be addressed. Illegal yacht charter is nothing new, it happened before the economic crisis, but has gradually worsened as people tighten their budgets and search for ‘cheaper’ options, in the same way that people have turned to Airbnb for ‘cheaper’ accommodation. These unethical operators pay no tax, no licence fees, have no specialist safety equipment and take cash payments in order to stay under the radar. Customers focus on the money they save, rather than the protection they lose. It’s a serious matter.”

“To obtain a charter licence you have to adhere to various codes of practice,” continues Lorenzo, “and these include ensuring that the vessel is sound, insured and equipped with appropriate life-saving and fire-fighting gear. With an illegal charter, a client could be completely oblivious to the fact that they would not be insured in the event of a serious, or fatal, incident. They could also consider the chances of an accident to be too low to pass up the temptation of a cut-price charter.”

Legitimate ethical charter companies such as easyboats are disadvantaged as they must pay for moorings, year-round staffing and 21% IVA (VAT). The illegitimate businesses tend to be non-Spanish flagged, pick up and drop off clients at fuel quays, and pay no tax – anywhere. It has been allowed to continue in the Balearics as authorities usually only conduct routine checks on the legal businesses.

Lorenzo finishes, “I am sure this unauthorised practice does not happen to the same extent in other countries and there has to be a way to eradicate it. Individuals could denounce dishonourable businesses to the authorities, but most prefer to avoid this kind of unpleasant confrontation. A better solution would be to implement more police controls at marinas, heavily fine skippers for leading illegal charters and educate clients to request copies of charter licenses. easyboats is more than happy to produce paperwork for all its vessels. Let’s hope the industry does more than talk about this scandal and takes some decisive action.”

Superyacht Cup   -   Moll Vell / Old Port   -   Palma

Gabinete de Prensa Superyacht Cup Palma.

More than 100 jobs in local companies. The Superyacht Cup Palma is not only one of the most important nautical sports events at European and international level, but is a major economic and employment impact for Palma.

And as for the organization and assembly of the event, the superyacht cup palma hires most of its necessities from local businesses. These contracts provide work for 4 days to about 100 people mostly from Palma.

Companies like Beewi , Bon Profit, Hogan's , Cranes Amenguan , Rent Module , Tot a Punt , Dock Bar, UMS , Pacha, Bodegas José Luis Ferrer and Segurisba , among many others, are some of the companies involved in assembly, logistics and organization of the Superyacht Cup Palma 2015.

Apart from all these collaborators we have to add the hundreds of crew members who come with the yachts. Each of the yachts moves around 30 people between captain and crew not to mention the family and guests of the owners, who during these days will enjoy the sightseeing and shopping in Palma. In total, this race moves about 1,000 people, this according to a study by the Chamber of Commerce of Mallorca. The economic impact is about 4 million euros.

Charity event. The Superyacht Cup Palma collaborates with the charity project of Young Navigant’s. After the race , the organization will make a donation to the association through which there have already supported major projects.

In 2013 the association produced the Tall Ship; in 2014 the money collected went to repairing the boat Galaxie and this year the money will go to a youth project with Project Jove with two trips for four days with eight young people to the island of Menorca.

An economic impact of EUR 4 million
Without doubt, the Superyacht Cup positions the city of Palma as one of the leading nautical tourism destinations worldwide. Four days in which not only the competition generates a lot of jobs in both local and foreign companies , but also becomes a great meeting point for thousands of visitors.

We have to notably point out that only for the marine industry the Superyacht Cup moves more than 1,000 people between participants, fellow travellers, accredited staff , workers and onboard crew, not forgetting all those nautical and sea lovers that make these days a “must” in Palma.

Many people who during their stay in Palma will carry out a major economic spend on the different services such as dining , tourism, and all commercial and social outlets that the island has to offer. According to a study by the Chamber of Commerce at the time, the economic impact of the participants could be around between 3 and 4 million euros.

Although the competition lasts four days , participants arrive in Palma several days in advance and return to their countries of origin several days after the race as finished. This provides Palma with visitors in an average for10 days during the dates of the regatta. It is also important to note that many yachts use their stay in the port of Palma for repairs, in this case the average duration of the crew in Palma exceeds 100 days.

About Superyacht Cup Palma
The Superyacht Cup is now in it’s 19th year; starting out as an 'end of season' party for yachts leaving the Mediterranean for the Caribbean, it has grown into one of the highlights of the European superyacht summer schedule.

Back in 1995 the idea of fleet racing was far too serious, many of the boats were taking part without the owner's being present so the simpler and safer option of a pursuit race was devised. The principal was simple- the smallest and slowest boat starts first, the larger faster boats starting at specific time intervals afterwards to 'try and catch up'. The time differences in these early days were simply based on an estimate of the time taken to get around the course and were adjusted daily. At the end of the day the captains and crew met for a beer or two on the dock and the party began.

Over the years the event has grown in popularity and the trend in performance-orientated yachts has brought many new entries. A new organization, the Superyacht Racing Association (SYRA) http://www.superyra.org/ was formed in 2012 to represent the interests of those taking part in Superyacht regattas all around the world, addressing and improving the safety issues and aiming to enhance the enjoyment for the owners with fair, safe racing.

The most important aspect of the event still remains, that it is a ‘fun’ regatta both on and off the water and sailing safely in the spirit of the event is the focus.

Palma Boat Show 2015.              30th April - 4th May

Feedback from participants in Palma 2015 has been very favourable. Record numbers of visitors reported (some 40,000 estimated), some 180 boats on show and 207 exhibitors represented. Some exhibitor comments below:-

Arne Ploch of Camper and Nicholson, has played a leading role in the establishment of the Palma Superyacht Show which was established three years ago in Port Adriano and for the last two years has taken place alongside Palma Boat Show. Arne and his fellow organisers are widely praised for having rescued the ailing Palma Boat Show and having restored it to a Mallorca Lighthouse nautical event. Arne is well pleased with Palma 2015 / Palma superyacht Show 2015 - with no adverse reports. Now that the dual event is well established and more widely publised Arne has seen a move from a largely local visitor base to a much wider range of visitors with many prospective clients coming from across the world. With 67 superyachts on display prospective clients were able to view a range of broker or charter boats with similar specs - all in the same location. Arne was very happy with the coexistence of large boats and smaller vessels and services in the same venue. Palma is much more informal and friendly than the more serious Monte Carlo with an excellent ambience - also helped by the now open Moll Vell development with it's excellent range of eateries and nearby historic and gastronomic attractions. For 2016 Arne sees the refinement of the current successful formula based on the stability of the last two years and wider publicity for this spring event - with boats in the water and under sunny blue skies !!

Edward Oppenheimer of Port Adriano based Frauscher. Frauscher had two prestige motor yachts on display. Edward was well pleased with the volume of visitors particularly over the first two days with a mixture of visits from known clients and potential customers.

Matthias Ebert of Bavaria Spain was also well pleased with Palma 2015. Bavaria had a Bavaria Sport 44 HT Highline motor yacht and a Cruiser 46 sailing yacht on display with many more new and pre-owned yachts to view nereby at Club de Mar. Bavaria Spain, official distributor for Bavaria Yachts in Spain, presented its new information and service system called Bavaria+ consisting of four elements, BAVIS (Bavaria Information System), SHOP, CHECK and ACADEMY. The system - which proved popular with visitors - was demonstrated during the show on board of the prize winning Bavaria Cruiser 46, “European Yacht of the Year 2015” in category family cruiser. Every new Bavaria will be equipped with a boat specific QR-Code that can be scanned with a smartphone or tablet computer to allow for easy access to all the information (BAVIS) an owner or charter client might need. Short videos explain the control panel or the handling of the electric windlass. The check book (CHECK) for the new yacht is included in the package and also available online. And if the client is looking for additional equipment or a spare part, he can directly enter the SHOP to find, order and receive the desired items without complications. The fourth component (ACADEMY) will be coming soon and includes trainings for Bavaria dealers and other professionals as well as sea trials or skipper trainings for customers.   More Info.

Linda Zibala of Princess in Port Adriano reported that Princess
Motor Yachts were very well pleased with Palma 2015. Six boats were on display with the sale of two boats being finalised during the show. Visitor numbers were good with many serious potential clients from throughout Europe and in particular from the UK and Germany - no doubt assisted by simultaneous public holidays in Spain, UK and Germany. The extended Boat Show area and Moll Vell restaurant developments added to the improved ambience. The link up by Princess with Proa Premium Mallorca involving the display of the latest BMW models and cocktails by Purobeach proved popular with visitors as did the Princess Sunday "Late Night Event"  More Info  Princess report a busy few weeks ahead - Barcelona next week and then "Best of Yachting at Port Adriano" later in the month.

Nicolas Sierra of Alcudia based SEALINE had three models on display which attracted considerable interest and promising leads. Nicolas also welcomed the extended area and improved Moll Vell facilities.

Palma Boat Show 2016 will take place at Moll Vell Palma between Thursday 28th April and Monday 2nd May 2016.

Full steam ahead for Palma Boat Show.

By Humphrey Carter,  Majorca Daily Bulletin.   4th April 2015

The countdown is on to the start of the Palma Boat Show, one of the most important in the Mediterranean.

Palma.—The 32nd Palma Boat Show will open its doors to the general public on 30 April and this year over 200 exhibitors are going to be taking part, nearly 75 percent more than in 2012, making it one of the largest nautical events in the Mediterranean. For the third consecutive year, the event will include the Palma Superyacht Show which will feature 70 yachts of up to 65 metres in length. The organisers said yesterday that this year, they expect more than the 32,000 people who visited the show last year. This year, the show will cover an area of 4,500 square metres and will be using 120 moorings in front of La Llonja. 70 percent of the businesses exhibiting at the show are foreign, although nearly all of them have offices or outlets here in the Balearics which has one of the largest nautical  industries in Europe and Palma boasts some of the best shipyards for refits and repairs in the world.

Majorca Daily Bulletin.      4th April 2015

Press Release:
Gabinete Prensa BoatShow Palma 2015:
Saturday April 4, 2015

Palma International Boat Show hangs the sold out sign

The 32nd edition of the Boat Show Palma & Palma Superyacht Show organized by the Innovation Management Institute and -integrated in the Balearic Government- will be held between April 30th and May 4th

The high demand of participation has pleasantly forced the Organization to enlarge the exhibition space, both on land and sea

The Palma Superyacht Show has increased the number of yachts on display: more than 70 boats of up to 65 meters. Therefore, this years event is considered the best exhibition of super sailing yachts worldwide

Saturday April 4, 2015 - The next edition of the Palma International Boat Show, to be held between April 30th and May 4th, surpasses last year’s numbers and fulfills the Organization’s expectations.

For this reason, Innovation Management Institute (integrated in the Balearic Government) has closed the contracting process and there is an outstanding waiting list for participation.

So, consequently, the exhibition space (both on land and moorings) has been increased. This year’s exposition will take place between April 30th and May 4th at the old dock (Moll Vell) of the Port of Palma (Lonja P1-P2-P3; Royal Flush spring; Old pier; Moorings Marina and Sports Luggage spring) from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (except on May 2, closing at 11 p.m.)

“Palma Superyacht Show” bets on Luxury Yachts

For the third consecutive year, coinciding with the International Boat Show Palma, Palma hosts the third edition of the Palma SuperYacht Show, the trade show for Luxury Yachts that year after year, attracts more assistants.

This year’ numbers of boats has increased: over 70 vessels of up to 65 meters will be on show. Last but not least, not only there is an increase on the amount of luxury yachts, (both sail and motor boats), but also the variety. The organizers have announced the presence of large vessels such as the “Mondanga 2” and the “Eleonora”, both exceeding 49 meters in length.

Palma Superyacht Show is focused on the marine industry and dedicated to luxury brokers.

In the words of the Minister of economy for the Balearic islands Government Mr. Joaquín García: "there are more requests from companies who want to participate then available space" something that reflects with no doubt, "this Boat Show has positioned itself as a national and international leader in the nautical world".
The greatest success of this event, said the Minister, "is having the participation and involvement of all private sectors." Only then, as mentioned by the highest responsible of the Boat Show Palma: "we can reach and achieve the good figures already achieved the previous year, when we broke previous participation records of both companies and visitors" which, he adds, "we will go further this year".

Eligibility Extended for International Certificate of Competence

Press release...      10-03-2015
Miss Sarah Drane   Purple Cake Factory

Previously, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) could only issue the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) to British nationals and residents, and to countries with special permission such as the Netherlands. However, since 30 December 2014, the organisation can now assign the coveted Certificate to citizens of all countries yet to adopt Resolution 40 – and this includes Spain.

Linda Revill, Principal of recognised RYA Training Centre, Aigua Sea School, says, “Unlike the European driving license for example, boating qualifications are neither harmonised nor accepted across the EU, and can be the cause of great confusion. The ICC however is the most recognised document to have on your person while boating in Europe and reassures the local government of your competence. As a Spain-based RYA Training Centre, it’s fantastic news we can now issue this very handy Certificate to non-British citizens including Spanish, Portuguese and Russians – despite them not having signed up to Resolution 40. It will make all our boating lives much easier.”

Although not an actual qualification itself, the ICC provides documented evidence that the person in charge of the yacht officially has the necessary skills. The Certificate covers three categories – sail, power (subdivided into under and over ten metres) and personal watercraft (PWC). It can be issued for coastal waters and for inland should the applicant have passed a European Code for Navigation on Inland Waterways (CEVNI) test.

Lorenzo Vila, Director of easyboats, who partners Aigua Sea School for training purposes, said, “Clients who purchase and charter yachts from us are often asking about skipper training and refresher courses. We make it very clear that their certificates must be shipshape so as not to fall foul of the law, with minimum requirements being a one-day proficiency certificate to pilot a PWC, a two-day Level 2 certificate for a powerboat, a four-day Day Skipper course for a motor cruiser and a five-day Day Skipper course for sailing. With Aigua now able to secure an ICC on all of the above, whether you’re a British or Spanish citizen, the authorities will be more than satisfied that you’re capable and competent.”

Dating back to 1979, the ICC was originally conceived by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe to ensure safety of navigation along the Rhine and Danube as boaters passed from country to country. It was updated in 1998 with the revisions documented as Resolution 40. Not all countries adopted this Resolution creating a divide between the likes of Austria, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland who did sign up and France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain who didn’t. Therefore the ICC is only valid in countries where they have chosen to accept it, and boaters should always check in advance.

Unique Amphibious RIB Comes to the Market in Mallorca.

Press release...      17-02-2015
Miss Sarah Drane   Purple Cake Factory

With motorised, retractable, steerable wheels, Sealegs amphibious RIBs change the game when it comes to launching and retrieving a boat. Thought to be the only one of its kind in Mallorca, this immaculate pre-loved 7.1 metre is now for sale with easyboats.

Lorenzo Vila, Director of 25-year-established easyboats, says, “Research says that Sealegs owners use their boat, on average, up to ten times more than they officially thought. It’s not surprising. The clever land-water design offers great freedom with no more offshore anchoring, no more boat beaching and no wet feet. An obvious target audience is private individuals with seafront homes who can make it ashore without the vehicle/trailer/ramp rigmarole, another is commercially-minded beachside bars and restaurants, such as Nikki Beach, who’d rather their VIPs didn’t get wet en-route. Sealegs also make great superyacht tenders. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used a Sealegs during their 2014 New Zealand Royal Tour – if it’s good enough for royalty... I think she’ll be sold at first sea trial.”

Sealegs is a New-Zealand-based company which set up in 2003 to cater to both recreational and professional (coastguards, military) markets. Its recreational boats are designed for family fun and adventure and are ideally suited to young children, who are safer inside the boat during launching and retrieving, and for older people who find it tough to manhandle boats onto trailers and ramps. Also, with launch taking just a few moments, boaters can seize small windows of opportunity of good weather to go for a blast across the water – and then drive back onshore for a glass of something at a beach club.

In-water, the boat is driven and used as normal with a responsive hull delivering a smooth top speed of 74km/h. However, on approach to shore she makes conventional RIB (or indeed any other motorboat) owners go green with envy. Simply throttle back to idle, tilt up slightly, hit a button and deploy the three retractable ‘legs’. They’re down in about ten seconds and then the Sealegs can be driven ashore (up to 25-degree grades of sand, rocks, mud) at a more-than-satisfactory 7km/h. The front of the RIB lowers to an easy clamber-off level for disembarkation. It’s a shame Sealegs aren’t street legal...

For Sale With easyboats – 7.1-Metre Sealegs RIB

One owner since new (June 2013), this 7.1-metre RIB has just 60 hours on the clock. With seating capacity for eight adults (in and out of the water) she has plenty of underfloor and locker storage and a Yamaha 150hp engine.

Price – 150,000 euros (tax paid)

Spanish Superyacht Charter Fleet Burgeons after Tax Exemption.

Press release...    01-12-2014
Miss Sarah Drane   Purple Cake Factory

With charter yachts of any length now exempt from paying 12% matriculation tax whilst operating in Spanish waters, superyachts are queuing to register in Spain. The country’s most popular cruising ground – the Balearics – is feeling the effects.

Lorenzo Vila, Director of Mallorca-based easyboats, celebrating 25 years in business in 2014, comments, “Matriculation Tax, or IEDMT, had all-but obliterated Spanish charter by driving business into far-more-favourable EU waters. However, with the tax exemption now inscribed in law, alongside new legislation allowing non-EU-flagged boats to offer charter services, our superyacht charter market is burgeoning. A preliminary study by AEGY, the Spanish Association of Superyachts, shows that 21 yachts over 24 metres joined the Balearic charter market for the 2014 season. Palma-based Network Marine Consultants believe that figure is much higher in reality, most likely 34 yachts, with many more set to join the fleet for 2015. These are exciting times and not only will charter companies such as easyboats benefit from the relaxed legislation, but also the wider Spanish economy.”

The same AEGY study highlights the considerable wealth that these 21 additional yachts (ranging between 25 and 52 metres) have already brought to the Balearics, almost four million euros, broken down in terms of charter fees, fuel, food and beverage, and mooring costs. With around 600 yachts over 24 metres available for charter in the western Mediterranean, it’s only a matter of time before owners and captains realise that Spain is now open for business and it gathers a far larger market share and economic gain.

Lorenzo finishes, “The signs are good, legislation is becoming more favourable, and we applaud the progress that has been made so far. But a certain degree of patience will be required before we see a Spanish superyacht charter fleet that runs into the hundreds. The good news is that, charter aside, many more superyachts visited Mallorca in the summer, at least double those we spotted in 2013, as they build the Balearics into their Mediterranean itineraries. With each Island offering a different personality: Menorca for tranquillity and unspoiled landscapes, Ibiza for glamour, beach clubs and nightlife, Formentera for an unbeatable coastline and seafood restaurants, and Mallorca for dramatic landscapes, seafront dining and high-end marinas such as Port Adriano, Port Andratx and Puerto Portals, we can both complement and compete with the South of France and Italy.”

Palma leads growth in nautical market
By Humphrey Carter        Majorca Daily Bulletin.
12th November 2014

Palma.—The nautical industry has enjoyed a lucrative year with the sale of new boats up by over ten percent in comparison to last year. The Federation of Nautical Commerce, Industry and Services (FADIN), reported yesterday that, up until the end of last month, 10.3 percent more new vessels had been sold than in 2013. In total, 3,932 new vessels have been sold and, according to Jordi Senties, FADIN President, said that the industry as a whole is “very satisfied” with how the market has performed this year.
“This is further evidence that the worst of the recession is over and we can now start rebuilding the sector,” he claimed.
And, leading the upturn has been the nautical sector in Palma.

Since the start of the year, a total of 487 nautical vessels were sold in Palma, 33 percent of the overall market. Palma also led the charter market with 217 vessels being hired out. Senties did, however, point out that there has been a surge in the number of jet skis being purchased by rental companies targeting tourists and that has helped to boost sales as well.

MOORINGS TO BE INCREASED
By Humphrey Carter    Majorca Daily Bulletin.
1st November 2014

Nearly eight million euros is currently being invested in improving the facilities in nine Balearic marinas in order to cope with rising demand.

Palma.—The Balearic Minister for Tourism, Jaime Martinez, has said that Ports IB, the Balearic government body which controls the non state, Balearic Port Authority, ports, is in the process of investing 7.7 million euros over a period of two years in improving and expanding the services offered at nine of the region’s marinas.

Martinez explained that the body knows that the 24,000 moorings it manages in the Balearics, are not enough to meet demand during the summer season and that the number of moorings has to be increased in order to enable the nautical industry to continue to flourish.

Ports IB has targeted nine marinas, Ciutadella in Minorca, Sant Antoni in Ibiza and Puerto Pollensa, Puerto d’Andratx, Colonia de Sant Jordi, Portocolom, Porto Cristo and Cala Bona in Majorca.

Best of Yachting - Port Adriano 2014 (6th - 9th June).

The inaugural Best of Yachting at Port Adriano has been widely acclaimed as an overwhelming success by both the organisers and major participants - including Princess, Sunseeker, Frauscher, Yacht Moments and Ventura Yachts. Participants confirmed that the event attracted nautical visitors to Mallorca in addition to visitors from across the Island. The mooring configuration for boats on display facilitated relatively easy sea trials and provided potential clients with an extensive range of quality craft to view in a relaxed and relatively spacious setting.

With fashion parades, Irish music and dance, displays of nautical toys, a well-equipped children’s area plus many fine eateries the event provided something for everyone which was reflected in the volumes of people attending. Best of Yachting at Port Adriano would seem destined to be a popular fixture in the Mallorca nautical calendar.

Press Release from APEAM   02-04-2014
Asociación Patronal de Empresarios de Actividades Marítimas de Baleares

Meeting between APEAM an Ports IB officials

Following the announcement by Ports de les Illes Balears (Ports IB) privatization of management of several of the ports within its competence, the APEAM direction of the Committee on Marine Excursions has been holding regular meetings with the heads of IB ports, in order to advance the search for a solution to the problem that the privatization of the ports would cause to companies in this sector.

At these meetings, the last of which was held last March 28, APEAM has had the opportunity to move its associates serious concern about the future operation and possible lifting costs and propose alternatives and solutions that have been listened attentively by Ports IB representatives.

Today will be another meeting, both sides open to the possibility of reaching a satisfactory solution for all entrepreneurs and to the public officials.

From APEAM will ensure in any case the defense of the interests of its partners.

APEAM it is the Professional Association of Maritime Entrepreneurs in Balearic Islands.

The autonomous region now has a total of 41 port facilities  of which 28 are managed from the private sector without incurring any negative circumstance for users or for the sector.

Another aspect is that the ownership of the ports will be remain public and so will continue and that the whole fisheries sector which operates in the autonomous ports, is outside any indirect management process , both with respect to the water surface area ( mooring ) , as markets and land installations whose operation will continue in charge - as usual - the fishermen's directly related to IB Ports.

APEAM is working for the boat trips sector left out of this process of transfer from direct management to indirect .

Ports de les Illes Balears is the public body which replaces the former Directorate General of Ports and assumed executive powers and the ports managed by the autonomous community functions.

Its main objectives include the rational use of coastal and natural resources , harmonizing the port system with territorial, urban planning, and the preservation of the coast, consistent with their cultural, scenic and environmental values. Encouraging the participation of economic and social agents in port policy and increase the quality in the provision of services to users and achieve greater agility in managing according to criteria of effectiveness, efficiency and good administration and ultimately promote economic activity of the ports in order to achieve financial self-sufficiency
