46,000 EU residents can vote in Balearics
By Humphrey Carter, Majorca Daily Bulletin. 28th October 2014.

A total of 45,874 non-Spanish EU residents in the Balearics are entitled to vote at the local elections next May and could make all the difference.

Palma.—They could make all the difference provided all of those entitled to vote, register to vote, but unfortunately the true reality is that only a minority have traditionally registered to vote in the past, despite the process being very easy. All you have to do is go and register with your town hall or even on line at the INE website.
The Balearics has the fifth largest EU resident voter base in Spain.
Madrid has the largest with 113,000 EU residents entitled to vote, there are 108,000 in Alicante, 76,000 in Malaga and 47,000 in Valencia.
Nationwide, there are a total of 840,000 EU residents entitled to vote, but at the last local elections, only 418,187 registered to vote, less than half, and that is a trend which was more or less repeated here in the Balearics.
The largest foreign voter community in Spain is from the UK. There are 160,000 UK residents who could vote next May followed by 150,000 Romanians, 90,000 Italians, 70,000 Germans, nearly 60,000 French and 50,000 Bulgarians.

Voting in Spain in the European Parliamentary elections
By James Birkett, British Embassy

Palma.—The Spanish deadline for registering an intention to vote in the European Parliamentary elections is Thursday 30 January. If you are a British resident in Spain you can have your say, provided you take action by the deadline.
The Spanish government has provided the following information (translated by the British Embassy) that residents may find useful:
Applications to express an intention to vote may be carried out in several ways:

In the case of citizens who received a communiqué from the Electoral Registry Office (Oficina del Censo Electoral) in November 2013, the only requirement is to fill in and sign the formal statement included in the communiqué and then send it to the relevant Regional Delegation of the Electoral Registry Office. In the event the Electoral Registry Office should also have the person’s Foreigner Identification Card Number (NIE), then that person may also go online to express the intention to vote, through the link https://sede.ine.gob.es

In the case of EU nationals living in Spain but not registered with the local town hall, it is necessary for them to register with their local town hall (padrón municipal) and fill in the relevant form expressing their intention to vote in Spain.
