1.      MOLL VELL PROGRESS UPDATE - http://youtu.be/seAKUv2nN4w - this was filmed at the 30th Palma International Boat Show (May) and has some AMAZING aerial footage.  It really shows how the marina has progressed since our last update (we were at foundation level pumping out sea water a few months ago in March - http://bcove.me/kfqk6ylf) and also shows how the marina looks with plenty of superyachts in situ as it provided the setting for the Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show 2013 which ran alongside the Boat Show.  I personally really like this five minute update, gorgeous boats.

2.      NEW EMERGENCY LADDER IN MOLL VELLhttp://youtu.be/8U9K015EPMg - this was filmed just last week (whilst they were preparing for the Superyacht Cup in the background) and puts a funny spin on a serious matter.  It’s short, just two minutes, and the fun happens at minute one!  You must watch it!

New Emergency Ladder for Palma’s Moll Vell Marina
In a constant endeavour to find the best quality and most practical products for Palma’s new improved Moll Vell marina, Joint Managing Partner Oscar Siches has installed an inventive emergency ladder he came across on his travels in Florida. This innovative “floating” ladder is designed to stay out of the water at all times which eradicates corrosion and any chance of marine growth that would otherwise make the steps slippery and dangerous. Grab the handles, step on the first rung and your body weight will lower the ladder into the water. Once you’ve emerged on to dry land, the ladder will return to its floating position above the waterline. The product is easy to install, no specialist equipment required, and maintenance free. Contact Oscar: marinamatters@siches.com.

Moll Vell Background Information:
Moll Vell is at the heart of Palma de Mallorca, surrounded by the 13th century cathedral, 15th century government site, gothic fish market from the same time and the old city ramparts. It has been used as a yacht harbour for the last 25 years and the attached building was home to maritime agents and associations, shipping companies and a couple of workshops – it also hosted “La Lubina” restaurant, where you could find politicians, captains of industry, football players, journalists and the most notorious Palma who’s who. The restaurant closed in the early nineties and the whole area started a period of continuous decay.

After many years of speculation, the harbour authority issued a public offer for the modernization of the marina and construction of a new building. In 2010 the concession was granted to Amarres Deportivos SL, a company formed by the managers of Pantalan del Mediterraneo marina here in Palma and Banco Pastor, one of the oldest banks in Spain (1776) and merged today with Banco Popular.

The winning project includes renewal of all moorings and shore services (24 berths, 22 for vessels over 25 metres in length and two for superyachts over 40 metres) and the demolition and rebuild of the building, which will be very modern in style and feature a restaurant, bar/café, a rooftop terrace with city views, offices and commercial units. The whole area towards Palma will become a public square with increased number of trees creating a green natural canopy - the marina area is separated by a glass fence to avoid creating a negative visual impact.

Investment will be in excess of 8 million euros and works will terminate end of 2013 ready for a spring 2014 opening.

Best wishes

Sarah

Sensational Comeback for Palma International Boat Show - With Royal Approval

Press release from Purple Cake Factory 6th May 2013.

Final figures will show that in the region of 37,000 visitors attended the 30th edition of the Palma International Boat Show which came to a close yesterday, Sunday 5 May. Amongst them was the King’s only son, Crown Prince Felipe, the first time in 30 years that a member of the Spanish royal family has attended.

A keen sailor, even competing in the 1992 Olympics as part of the Spanish sailing team, Crown Prince Felipe paid a surprise visit to the Show to present the Marcial Sanchez-Barcaiztegui Award, the first of its kind to recognise those who promote sailing. Sanchez-Barcaiztegui was one of the most respected and loved personalities in the sailing world and played a fundamental role in the promotion of the sport throughout Spain. Having paid tribute, Prince Felipe spent more than an hour walking around the Boat Show, greeting both exhibitors and the public.

Director of the Palma International Boat Show, Chema Sans, was delighted at the event’s success, “This was a completely different Show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot, the number of exhibitors was up 25% and the sea-based exhibition area up 76%, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics. Last year Monaco reported a record attendance of 33,000, we know for sure that we have beaten this figure and certainly had many more sailing superyachts on display. In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.”

Chema continued, “All the exhibitors I have spoken with seemed to be happy having gathered quality contacts and conducted serious business. Those promoting smaller craft may not have sold ten boats at the Show, as could have been the case a decade ago, but have had their expectations exceeded considering the difficult economic environment. Many are already thinking about next year, discussing their stand and berthing requirements. And, with the all-new eight million euro Moll Vell due to be complete and open for business by spring 2014, the Show can only build in importance and quality.”

For the 30th edition, public and private sector worked together to remodel the Show into a nautical week with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting – giving impetus to the economy and job creation.

Speaking exclusively to nautical channel NTVE.TV, Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Balearic Islands who declared the Show open on 1 May, said, “It is absolutely necessary for our economy, because now we want to improve our economy, we want to give opportunity for unemployed people and we want to be very proud of our industry in this nautical sector because they say we are the best all over the world.”

Quotes from the six members of the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association formed to organise the inaugural Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show:

Jochen Brill, Dahm International: “I am really pleased that we created the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association and staged this superyacht-specific Show. It’s good that Palma has understood the potential of this important sector of the industry. I have been 32 years in the business and we have never had so many big boats at this Show nor such serious buyers. We will be very happy to do it again next year.”

Marc Haendle, Ocean Independence: “The reaction has been good. We have welcomed a lot of serious customers, people we didn’t expect, including some famous faces, international celebrities who have houses here on the Island – this is exactly the calculation behind the idea to create this Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show. They know that with six famous companies involved, six good companies, when we stage an event it will be worth attending. For Ocean Independence we received a good offer on one of our yachts and we believe the Show was held at the right time in the right place. We love Mallorca and are happy to support it.”

Arne Ploch, Camper & Nicholsons: “For the first time the Boat Show represents what yachting actually is in Mallorca - an industry that makes its living from the larger yachts. We had a unique amount of sailing superyachts and, as the Show was organised by an association of half a dozen brokers, we worked hard to achieve the aim we wanted – to sell boats. We welcomed owners, clients and received two offers on one boat. Everyone is in a very positive mood and this is certainly the beginning of something much bigger in Palma. Next year we will bring more boats and expect more clients. It is now a question of working hard to establish the Show on the nautical calendar.”

Giulio Riggio, Fraser Yachts: “The Show worked up to a crescendo from day one to day five and, thanks to nice weather and superb organisation, it met our expectations. We spoke with a range of good potential clients, not just from the Island but also German, English, Swedish, Finnish and Russian clients who love to stay in Mallorca and combine land-based pleasure with their passion for yachting. The main aim at a Show is to create a good impression of our yachts and our Company, the business comes later, we must put it all together to earn the results, but certainly by working together with the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association we have more power in these pressured economic times. One thing that must come to an end is the ridiculous matriculation tax issue, it must be put on the table and resolved. Of the 47 yachts on show, only six were for charter due to matriculation tax. Prospects for 30 or 40 metre boats say if they can’t charter their boat in Spain, they will take it elsewhere, I heard this every one of the five days of the Show. The Balearics and Spain are losing valuable charter business and giving it on a plate to Italy and the like.”

Jamie Small, Burgess Yachts and OceanStyle by Burgess: “We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the number of qualified clients and yacht owners that visited the nine yachts we had on display at the Show. We received clients from across Europe and one from the United States that resulted in a positive viewing. We are excited about next year where the Show will be bigger, better and the new Moll Vell marina up and running. There is no reason why it shouldn’t become the premier pre-season show in Europe.”

Simon Turner, Northrop & Johnson: “For the first time we have given Palma a Boat Show that appeals to locals, tourists and serious buyers. The mix of boats alongside equipment and accessories has been an important one, particularly with captains, owners and crew in attendance - a captive audience for tenders, water toys, marine electronics and the like. It’s also been great for the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association to be able to manage itself, an enormous difference in comparison to say Monaco where the brokers go into tough competition with the yacht builders themselves. We hope that the Show will be a must-attend event on the calendar for the future.”

And quotes from other exhibitors:

Paul Allan, Portbooker: “This is the Show that Palma has been missing. The Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show in particular has given us a great platform to launch our brand new 40 metre plus site, superportbooker.com, and we’ve generated keen interest from marina partners and end-users over the past five days. We’re a global business but with strong local representation in the Balearics and we recognise these Islands as the leading nautical destination in the Med.”

Jimmy Blackburn, Fairline South Mallorca: “The weather has been fantastic and Mallorca is a great place for our customers to come and see us – a touch point to build relationships. We’ve gathered good leads, via previously known customers and new business, and it’s brilliant that we’ve been allowed to bring both new and used boats to the Show, priced between 200,000 and 1.4 million pounds. We will return in 2014.”

Stuart Bray, Bray Marine International: “At long last they’ve got it right. We’ve had a very productive five days, busy with customers. We will be back next year.”

Jamie Collins, Oyster Yachts: “Compared with 2011, the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show has brought a new dimension to the Palma International Boat Show. Inter-broker cooperation is key to business existence on the Island and it has worked well. Footfall has been impressive, aided I am sure by three non-working days, a bank holiday and the weekend. Our Oyster 100, Penelope, has been received well on her debut and it has been nice to see yachts of a similar size and usability alongside her. A large mix of nationalities from Russian to British, German to Italian, have come on board for a viewing and all been impressed. We’re very pleased and keen to participate again next year.”

Peter Franklin, The Islander magazine and NTVE.TV: “We were thrilled to have been awarded a contract by Show organisers to handle international promotion of the event. To then see it become such a great success has delighted the whole team. Part of our contract was to provide internet-based and local terrestrial TV coverage of the whole Show. To focus our programming we awarded ten 'Captains Lounge Best in Show' prizes which included six yachts across the size range - motor and sail – now viewable on www.ntve.tv. We look forward to being involved in an even bigger Palma International Boat Show in 2014."

Marc Kelly, Palma Refit: “The revamped Show has been well received and feedback positive. Without the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show we would not be here, as superyachts are our main target market, and in my opinion it’s been a long time coming. Not only have we been able to network and generate leads, but we’ve also been able to reinforce our image in the marketplace. We will be back next year.”

Salvador Sancho, Marina Estrella: “With last year’s Show postponed, it gave the event the opportunity to start again with a new format and of course the new agreement with the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show. Overall this has brought more international clients to the Show, many of them serious boat buyers. We have sold our Azimut 88 to a Portuguese client who travelled from Vilamoura, our Minorchino 42 to a British client who will berth her in Torrevieja, a Hanse 415 to another British client, an Azimut 55S to its new owner in Cascais and finally a Cobalt 242. Many enquiries also came for the Hanse 630 and 575. Not bad given we were expecting a quiet Show. The emphasis was on quality rather than quantity which was a blessing as it allowed our sales team to invest time in their clients and conduct sea trials without being under pressure. Next year we will certainly return, with at least ten boats, and feel positive that we are with the best yachts and businesses that Palma has to offer.”

Bauza kicks off the Boat Show  Palma
by Humphrey Carter.  2nd May 2013.

The 30th edition of the Palma Boat show kicked off its 30th anniversary celebrations in the Moll Vell yesterday after last year’s cancellation due to the economic crisis. Balearic president Jose Ramon Bauza started the proceedings in the presence of other local dignitaries including, the Mayor of Palma Mateo Isern and the central government delegate to the Balearics Teresa Palmer. Isern and Bauza delivered the opening speeches before going walkabout around the show. Growing The event, cancelled last year for the first time since it started 30 years ago in Alcudia - where it was called Muestra Nautica Flotante (the floating boat show) - will be open until May 5 and will include a movie festival, a sea food cooking show, and an exhibition of vintage boats, although the highlight will be the super yachts on display, some of them up to 45 metres long.

Puerto Portals.—Berthed opposite Wellies Restaurant in Puerto Portals you will find a unique boat that has just arrived on the island: the brand new Pearl 75. This beautiful craft was designed and built last year by Pearl Motor Yachts in Stratford Upon Avon and has made its maiden voyage to Majorca to participate in the Palma Boat Show. Pearl Motor Yachts is owned by Majorca residents and business people Tony and Margaret Whittaker OBE. Tony and Margaret not only own the business but they have also overseen the technical and interior design of this new addition to the Pearl fleet. The Pearl 75 has made waves in many ways: this is the first ever yacht interior that the internationally famous interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE has created and she has been rewarded with a nomination in the prestigious “Best Yacht Interior” category in the 2013 International Yacht and Aviation Awards.

Palma Boat Show to stage comeback in May
Revamped event to run from 1-5 May after late cancellation of 2012 show

The Palma Boat Show is staging a comeback this year after being cancelled at the 11th hour in 2012 due to a pinching of government funding and lack of commitment from exhibitors.

On from 1-5 May, the revamped 2013 event has been overhauled by organisers, who claim to have put together an "activity-packed nautical week", to run over five days instead of the previous nine.

Two other marine events - the International Yachting Forum and Superyacht Brokerage and Charter Show - will run alongside the boat show.

Entertainment running over the week will include a seafood festival, the 2013 Ocean International Film Festival, a classic boat display, sailing lessons and a regatta in the Bay of Palma.

"This is now a festival with a maritime flavour which showcases the Balearics' strength as a leading nautical destination," said Chema Sans, MD of the event.

Some 202 floating berths are available for boats ranging between eight and 65 metres, alongside 5,000 square metres of land-based exhibition in tented stands and open-air displays.

Marina Estrella, one of Spain's biggest boat dealers, will be taking 15 boats to the show, from Cobalts to Azimuts.

Andreas Reifers from the company said: "The market is stabilising, sales are already improved year-on-year and we are looking forward to a rewarding season."

Palma boat show relaunched      Majorca Daily Bulletin  20-03-2013

Palma.—The leader of the Balearic government, Jose Ramon Bauza, said that they hoped the Boat Show would be visited by more than 50'000 people. It will be taking place in the old port in the centre of Palma with 160 vessels of all shapes and sizes on show. Coinciding with the big event will be the Palma Superyacht Brokerage and Charter Show. This event is aimed at the larger yachts and 47 moorings for yachts of between 25 and 58 metres have been earmarked for the Charter Show.
Bauza has underlined the importance of the nautical industry for the local economy. “The industry is worth more than 800 million euros for the local economy of which 200 million comes from nautical builds and repairs,” he said yesterday during the presentation. The basic aim of the Boat Show is to give the industry a lift and confirming the islands´ position as one of the leading nautical areas in the Mediterranean.

Events
Apart from the actual show a series of other events will also be taking place including a nautical themed “tapas” food fair, the Maremostra cinema festival and a series of working sessions.

The Balearic government is keen to relaunch the Boat Show after it was cancelled last year because an alleged lack of interest by the ,local nautical world. Instead a floating boat show was staged in Puerto Portals which proved to be a huge success. But this year the Boat Show is back in Palma and looking to attract thousands of people during the five days which it is open to the public.

During the event the Balearic government is expected to come under pressure to scrap the 12 percent matriculation tax which has hit the industry hard.

International Yacht brokers organize
1st Palma Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show,
1 – 5th May 2013

Six Yacht Brokers, all with offices in Palma, Mallorca, are organising the 1st Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show following on from their successful event “Mallorca Superyacht Days” held in Port Adriano last year.

Burgess Yachts, Camper & Nicholsons International, Dahm International, Fraser Yachts, Northrop and Johnson and Ocean Independence have joined together to form the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA) which is behind this initiative.

The Show will form part of the Palma Boat Show, held on the same dates, but will be exclusively for yachts with a minimum length of 24m. The location in the historical centre of Palma makes it within walking distance from some of the most exclusive shops, restaurants and hotels on the island.

“It just made complete sense to combine our Superyacht Brokerage and Charter show with the Palma Boat Show. We are convinced that this new format will be a positive move for both events”, says Arne Ploch from Camper & Nicholsons International.

BYBA has signed a three year agreement with the Balearic Islands’ Government, organisers of the Palma Boat Show, to consolidate Mallorca and in particular Palma, as a strategic centre for large yachts in the Mediterranean. Already well known for its impressive refit and repair facilities many international companies are choosing to open up offices here, which in turn, benefits Palma in general.

Palma de Mallorca to stage an International Nautical Week in May 2013.

The 30th Palma International Boat Show which will run from 1st to 5th of May 2013, signals a completely new approach by the organisers, promising to deliver the variety and vibrancy that its host city is justly famous for.

The new government in The Balearics has harnessed the joint resources of the Palma City Council and a number of key players from the significant private yachting sector in Mallorca, in order to totally revamp the format of the show which started back in 1983, on the north side of the Island in Port Alcudia.

Since then Alcudia itself has spawned the well known Alcudiamar luxury marina complex, and other ports around the islands have seen the development of popular sailing clubs and internationally renowned marinas such as: Club de Mar, Real Club Nautico, Marina Port and Moll Vell in Palma, Port Adriano in El Toro, Club de Vela in Andratx, Cala d'Or Yacht Club and Marina Ibiza to name but a few!

The Bay of Palma now sees some of the most high profile and exciting regattas staged every year, due to its perfect sailing conditions, wide open seascape and highly competent local regatta organizing teams. These include the Copa del Rey, Princess Sofia, Palma Superyacht Cup, the Classic Trofeo Almirante Conde de Barcelona, plus dozens of others across all the seasons featuring amongst them, Lasers, Flying 15s, Dragons, J80’s and Optimists for young sailors.

During the same period the marine services infrastructure in The Balearics has grown exponentially, offering absolutely everything a yacht owner, captain or crew could possibly need. This includes the yachting industry's best known brokers, charterers and managers, the largest repair and refit facilities in the Mediterranean, and a multitude of dealers, chandlers, sailmakers, marine engineers, surveyors etc. etc.

Not surprisingly the ownership and management of these companies is truly international in nature. Nautical entrepreneurs have come to The Balearics from just about every corner of the globe, many of them arriving by sea on sabbatical sailing trips and deciding to stay permanently, using their experience and practical skills to build specialist marine businesses.

It goes without saying that the entertainment, catering, food and drinks selection is equally international and varied, with just as many foreign nationalities offering something for every taste and language, both in Palma, and in all of the island's ports. Then there is the rich cultural history of an ancient trading and fishing port, the trendy tapas bars, the imposing and pristine Palma Cathedral, the Palma Aquarium with Europe’s deepest shark tank...the beaches, the excellent wines, and of course the glorious early summer Mediterranean sunshine!

There has never been a better opportunity to see all of this showcased, and to experience all of its facets and variety, than to visit or exhibit at the 30th Palma International Boat Show, or put more accurately; Immerse yourself in the Palma de Mallorca Nautical Week...

And don't forget, the Palma Boat Show is still a truly outdoor event, no stuffy halls or chilly air conditioned tents, just a pleasant walk around in temperate ambient conditions, with enough shade and plenty of places to sit and relax with a cool drink whenever you want to. No 'boat show fatigue or burn out'... guaranteed!

PALMA BOAT SHOW POSTPONED UNTIL 2013.

The 29th Palma International Boat Show has been rescheduled for April 2013 following a decision by a new organising committee appointed by the Balearic government.

The Palma show has always been run by a government department which is in place to manage several trade and tourism fairs on the island each year. The recently elected local government in Palma had taken the approach of directly involving senior figures from the significant local yachting sector. The guiding principles behind the organising committee's remit are to ensure the Palma Boat Show can be economically viable, providing a value platform for exhibitors, and presenting a vibrant informative event for visitors. The majority opinion of the committee, which included presidents of the nautical business associations, yacht brokers and marina management, was that all of these objectives could be most adequately met by utilising their joint resources, and having the time to plan for a really successful Palma Boat Show in 2013.
